Some people who drink alcohol, use illegal drugs, or misuse prescription or over-the-counter medications may develop a substance use disorder. This means that a person uses these substances even when they cause harm to the person or to others. It can produce higher levels of mortality and disability in the Hemisphere than in the rest of the world. It is an important risk factor in the case of diseases and injuries associated with accidents and violence.

The impact of addiction can be far-reaching on:

  • HEART DISEASES
  • EMBOLISM

  • CANCER
  • HIV OR AIDS
  • HEPATITIS B OR C
  • ENDOCARDITIS
  • CELLULITIS
  • LUNG DISEASES

Current studies indicate that the onset of consumption is between 12-13 years. The beginning or route of entry is usually alcohol and tobacco, later the progression observed is towards marijuana and cocaine in many cases, this progression being greater the earlier the consumption.
